Meet your Tutor

Hello, I’m Julie, a qualified teacher and experienced private tutor, and I absolutely love helping children discover that they can succeed.

I have been teaching for more than 20 years and, during that time, I’ve taught children across the primary age range, worked with secondary pupils and supported students right through to GCSE. I currently work as a teacher and English Lead within a specialist provision, where I teach children with a wide range of individual learning needs, including autism, ADHD and difficulties with learning and cognition.

One of the things I’ve learned over the years is that no two children learn in exactly the same way. A child may be struggling because they have gaps in their knowledge, because the pace at school has been too quick, or simply because they have lost confidence and begun to believe that they “can’t do it”. My job is to find the approach that works for your child.

My tutoring covers English from EYFS through to GCSE, primary maths, phonics, Kent Test preparation and Functional Skills, and I also have extensive experience supporting children with SEN and dyslexia. Our highly qualified team can also provide Maths tuition from KS1 to GCSE.

I particularly love teaching English. As well as being an English Lead, I have a BA (Hons) in English and Communication Arts and, before becoming a teacher, I trained as a journalist. So reading, writing and communicating effectively have been an important part of my whole career.

But qualifications and experience are only part of what makes a good tutor.

For me, successful tuition is about getting to know the child sitting in front of me. I want my pupils to feel relaxed enough to have a go, make mistakes, ask questions and enjoy learning. I adapt my teaching to the individual child, breaking things down when necessary and providing plenty of encouragement while still making sure they are challenged.

My aim isn’t simply to help a child get through the next test. I want them to become a more confident, independent learner who can take what we practise together back into the classroom and eventually say “I can do this”.

Away from teaching, I’m very active and enjoy gym classes, walking, cooking and baking, going to the cinema and spending time with my family. If your child needs a little extra support, more confidence or a greater challenge, I’d be delighted to help.
